Laura Richardson lost her seat to Janice Hahn in the newly drawn 44th district. Joyce Beatty was elected to represent Ohio’s 3rd Congressional district, besting opponent Chris Long. As a result, the number of African American who will be in our 113th Congress is 15.

Up until this election, only 31 African American women have served in Congress; one in the Senate, and 30 in the House. That number includes the 15 women currently serving in the 112th Congress. Rep. Beatty will be the 32nd African American woman in the United States Congress.
